{"id":3155,"date":"2026-05-08T19:48:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T18:48:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cipl.org.uk\/?p=3155"},"modified":"2026-05-09T14:44:03","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T13:44:03","slug":"point-sur-une-premiere-annee-de-tva-au-lycee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cipl.org.uk\/en\/2026\/05\/point-sur-une-premiere-annee-de-tva-au-lycee\/","title":{"rendered":"Update on the First Year of VAT at the Lyc\u00e9e"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the School Council meeting on 22 April 2026, the Finance Department provided a brief report on the position regarding UK VAT recovered for the 2025 financial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a reminder, VAT was applied to our establishment, along with all independent schools in the United Kingdom, from 1 January 2025. This resulted in a 20% increase in our school fees. In addition, a general 4% fee increase decided by the AEFE was applied in September 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The school thus collected <strong>\u00a36.8m<\/strong> on behalf of HMRC from \u00a334m of school fees (ex VAT), for a total revenue of \u00a347m inc VAT. (including \u00a36m of non VATable revenue)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The school was able to reclaim VAT on the following costs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a3<strong>485k<\/strong> relating to previous years (\u00a3288k in respect of goods and services for 2024 and \u00a3197k for investments over the last 10 years),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a3<strong>700k<\/strong> relating to operating costs in 2025,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I.e. <strong>\u00a31.185m<\/strong> total<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>(Note: School meal fees and those relating to Petite Section classes are neither collected nor recoverable.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, out of the <strong>\u00a36.8m<\/strong> collected on behalf of HMRC, the school has been able to reclaim <strong>\u00a31.185m. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-regular\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>m\u00a3<\/th><th>ex-VAT<\/th><th>VAT collected\/paid<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Revenue<\/td><td>34.2 <em>subject to VAT<\/em><br>6 <em>non-subject to VAT<\/em><br><strong>40.2<\/strong> <em>total<\/em><\/td><td>6.8<br>0<br><strong>6,8<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Expenses <\/td><td>39.9<\/td><td>1.1 <em>of which deductible :  <\/em><br><strong>0.7 <\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Reclaimed on previous years (<em>CE 08\/12\/2025<\/em>)<\/td><td>&#8211;<\/td><td><strong>0.485<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><tfoot><tr><td>Total VAT reclaimed<\/td><td><\/td><td><strong>1.185<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tfoot><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This sum of <strong>\u00a31.185m<\/strong> is currently held in the school\u2019s cash reserves (representing approximately 3% of the 2026 budget).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is legitimate to ask what will happen to this additional cash. During the financial webinar in February 2025, families were told that the school would wait until it could accurately assess the recoverable amounts before committing to any adjustments to fees.
